Cleaning Out Your Closet

Expert Advice for a New You

Are the skeletons in your closet trying to tell you it’s time for an update? Are you finding it too overwhelming to even begin? Everyone needs to rotate items out of their closet now and then, and it is easy to hang on to those items we loved so much. However, styles change, ages change and bodies change and our clothes should be making these changes with us! We sat down with stylist Andre Wilson so we can get some tips on how to clear out the old and welcome some much-needed new!

Can you give us a few pointers or tips for cleaning out our closets at home?
When I look in someone’s closet, I can tell the last time they felt great about themselves by what is stored there. If I see clothes from 1991, or even the 1980′s – that is usually a time they felt on top of the world in some way. So I ask them, “When was the last time you felt amazing and why?” And then we can choose a piece or two from that time to save in a memory box, then move on to clearing out the past and build to a better present.

How do we decide what stays and what goes?

First, anything that is worn, damaged, stained or frayed must be cleared out. Unless it goes into the memory box we mentioned, these things should simply be tossed out. Next, what no longer fits your lifestyle? Are corporate suits taking up space for a life you once lived, but are no longer participating? Time to set them aside, and donate them to a good cause. Finally, what works now? We keep those and build on them.

What are a couple staples that you should continue to hang on to?

Basics like a black skirt, a sheath dress, great trousers, and a great pair of jeans. Trouser jeans are the most versatile. Whatever your style starts from are keepers. Make certain they fit well and are cleaned and pressed. It is essential to have access to a good tailor and dry cleaner.

Should you update these staples, and how often?

Keep an eye on current trends for the finishing touches, such as lapel size and skirt length. Some are classic, others may change over time. Accessories like shoes and bags are usually one of the tell tale items you want to keep current.

If someone is finding their closet overwhelming, where do you suggest they start?

Find a good friend who will help you sort through your closet, or hire a professional stylist.
